Environmental and sustainable investments
In recent years care of the environment has come to the fore. Nobody can fail to be aware of green issues, from the day to day recycling of household waste to big topics such as the impact of climate change.
Our purchasing decisions are now shaped by factors which we would not have thought about 10 years ago. Buying a new car, what’s the CO2 figure?
At a political level we have signed up to binding agreements on emissions, with financial consequences for exceeding the limits. In many ways the drive towards creating a sustainable economy will impact more and more on our daily lives.
What does this mean for investments?
Most people hold investments in companies, either through their personal pension funds or savings plans such as ISAs. In most cases we have some degree of choice as to where these are invested.
Over the past few years interest in green and socially responsible investing has vastly increased. In response to this, there has been a growth in investment and pensions companies offering environmental and sustainable investment funds.
By investing in sustainable funds we are contributing to the development of companies and technology dealing with the big challenges, such as clean energy, green transport and more sustainable living.
Successful companies in these fields will grow and prosper, and we can share in that.
According to the Investment Managers Association, savers put £3.5 Billion into ISAs alone in 2009-10. From 2011 the ISA allowance has increased to £10,680 per year, so there is the potential for huge amounts of money to go into green investment.
